SBS Modified Bitumen

Project specification

SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) modified bitumen blended to project specifications. The SBS network gives high elasticity, low-temperature flexibility and strong rutting resistance.

Uses

Where SBS Modified Bitumen is used

Polymer modified bitumen (PMB) adds elastomers such as SBS, or plastomers such as EVA, to the binder. The result is more elastic, more resistant to rutting and cracking, and longer-lasting.

Storage & Handling

Storing SBS Modified Bitumen

Temperature

Temperature: Store between about 160°C and 180°C. Polymer-modified binders need slightly higher handling temperatures than plain bitumen.

Agitation

Agitation: Use tanks with agitators or circulation so the polymer stays evenly dispersed. Unstirred PMB can separate over time.

Safety

Safety: Keep water away from hot binder, use heat-resistant PPE, and keep the area ventilated and free of ignition sources.

Shelf life

Shelf life: Plan deliveries to be used within days of arrival where possible. Long hot storage degrades the polymer.
